Needs Assessment of Teachers and Learners for Spatial Citizenship Education

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze perceptions and needs of the educational field necessary for the developing a teaching and learning model for spatial citizenship education. To this end, a teacher and learner needs assessment was conducted, and the results are as follows: First, both teachers and learners agreed on the necessity of spatial citizenship education. The reasons cited included citizenship education through geography courses, providing opportunities to utilize geospatial technologies, and forming a spatial perspective. Second, Google Earth is preferred as a tool for citizenship education. Among geospatial technologies, it had the highest utilization rate among teachers and was evaluated as a useful learning tool due to its various functions. Third, it was suggested to use community issues as educational topics. They believe that it is relevant to learners’ real life and can increase their motivation and social engagement. Fourth, the collection and analysis of geographic information using statistical data, geographic information web services, and fieldwork were suggested. The result is based on the fact that both teachers and students recognize the importance of students creating geographic representations based on actual data and using them to analyze ans solve social problems.

본 연구의 목적은 공간적 시민성 교육을 위한 교수·학습모형 개발에 필요한 학교 현장의 인식과 요구를 수집 및 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 교사, 학습자 요구 분석을 진행하였고, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교사와 학습자 모두 공간적 시민성 교육의 필요성에 공감하였다. 그 이유로는 지리교과를 통한 시민성 교육, 지리정보기술 활용 기회의 제공, 공간적 관점의 형성을 들었다. 둘째, 시민성 교육의 도구로 구글어스를 선호한다. 지리정보기술 중, 교사의 활용률이 가장 높았으며, 다양한 기능이 있어 유용한 학습 도구로 평가하였다. 셋째, 교육 주제로는 지역사회 문제를 활용할 것을 제안하였다. 학습자의 실제 생활과의 관련성, 학습 동기와 참여도를 높일 수 있다고 보았다. 넷째, 통계자료, 지리정보웹서비스, 야외조사를 활용한 지리정보의 수집 및 분석을 제안하였다. 교사와 학생 모두 학생들이 실제 데이터를 기반으로 지리적 재현물을 제작하고, 이를 통해 사회문제를 분석·해결하는 과정을 중요하게 인식한 것에 근거한다.
