Recently, ‘transformative education for sustainability’ has been actively developed regardless of the government, schools, and society. Transformative education, such as environmental education, education for sustainable development, and ecological transformation education, began in common as a response to the crisis awareness of sustainability. However, there are differences in the diagnosis of the cause of the crisis and solutions. To compare the similarities and differences between transformative educations, this study examined positions on major issues of transformative education, such as anthropocentrism versus ecocentrism, environmental limitations, and capitalism’s responsibility for the crisis. Environmental education and ecological transformation education aim for ecocentrism, recognize the absolute finiteness of the environment, and affirm that the capitalist economic system is responsible for the crisis. However, education for sustainable development is silent on the issue of capitalism’s responsibility, shows an ambiguous position between anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, and recognizes relative limitations in the capacity of the environment.
‘지속가능성을 위한 변혁교육’은 최근 정부, 학교, 사회를 가릴 것 없이 활발하게 전개되고 있다. 환경교육, 지속가능발전교육, 생태전환교육 등 변혁교육들은 공통으로 지속가능에 대한 위기의식에 대한 대응으로서 출발하였다. 그러나 위기의 원인 진단과 해결 방안에서는 서로 차이점이 존재한다. 변혁교육들 간의 유사점과 차이점을 비교하기 위하여 본 연구는 인간중심주의 대 탈인간중심주의, 환경의 한계성 여부, 그리고 자본주의의 책임 문제 등 변혁교육의 주요 쟁점에 대한 각각의 입장을 고찰하였다. 환경교육과 생태전환교육은 모두 탈인간중심주의를 지향하고 환경의 절대적 유한성을 인정하며 자본주의 경제체제가 위기에 책임이 있다는 것을 긍정하고 있다. 반면에 지속가능발전교육은 자본주의의 책임 문제에 대해서 침묵하는 태도를 보이고, 탈인간중심주의와 인간중심주의 사이에서 모호한 입장을 보이고 있으며 환경의 용량에 대해서는 상대적 한계성을 인정하고 있다.
