This study examines the characteristics and implications of French elementary geographic education by analyzing the 2020 elementary curriculum in France. Elementary geographic education in France is systematically conducted from an early age, securing a high level of subject status such as 「Questions of the World」, an integrated subject with a high proportion of geographic topics in the lower grades, and 「History and Geography」, an independent subject in the higher grades. In addition, one of the common cross-curricular competencies (representation of world and human activities) that must be cultivated in all subjects during the elementary school course (Cycle 2) to the middle school course (Cycle 4) is also highly related to geographic education. In addition, elementary geographic education in France is characterized by organizing the contents by using the expanding environments framework within the unit subjects such as location, space organization, lifestyles, landscapes, life place, movement, communication, and sustainable development, and the concentric circle expansion method that crosses various spatial scales for each subject. Through the selection and organization of such contents, elementary geographic education in France ultimately seeks to understand the place of life as an existential space and to cultivate a spatial perspective on the world. The characteristics have some implications for our elementary geography education, such as reflecting on the nature of geography education, the need to strengthen understanding of spatial aspects of location and life, and the applicability of the method of expanding horizon by subject.
이 연구는 프랑스의 2020 개정 초등교육과정을 분석하여 프랑스 초등지리교육의 특성과 그 함의를 고찰한 것이다. 프랑스의 초등지리교육은 저학년에서는 지리적 주제의 비중이 높은 통합교과인 「세계탐구」, 고학년에서는 독립 교과인 「역사·지리」 등의 높은 교과적 위상을 확보한 채, 이른 시기부터 체계적으로 이루어진다. 또한, 초등학교 과정(Cycle 2) ~ 중학교 과정(Cycle 4) 동안 모든 교과에서 배양해야 할 범교과적 공통 역량(기본공통 5대 영역) 중 하나(세계 및 인간 활동의 재현)도 지리교육과 관련성이 높다. 그리고 프랑스의 초등지리교육은 위치, 공간조직, 생활양식, 경관, 삶터, 이동, 통신, 지속가능한 발전 등의 지리 주제를 중심으로, 단위 주제 내에서는 지평확대 방식을, 주제별로는 다양한 공간 스케일을 넘나드는 동심원확대 방식을 동원하여 내용을 조직하는 특징을 보인다. 이 같은 내용 선정 및 조직을 통하여 프랑스의 초등지리교육은 궁극적으로 실존 공간으로서의 삶터에 대한 이해와 세계를 바라보는 공간적 관점의 함양을 추구한다. 이상의 특성들은 지리교육의 본연성에 대한 성찰, 위치 학습 및 삶의 공간적 측면 이해 강화 필요성, 주제별 지평확대 방식 적용 가능성 등 우리의 초등지리교육에 모종의 함의를 준다.
