The Transformation of the Meaning of Other Spaces and Implications for Geography Education 타자 공간의 의미 전환과 지리교육적 함의: 박명화

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to transform the meaning of the other and the other space and to explore the implications of this for geography education. Othering is achieved through binary categorization based on modern ideas, and this distinction alienates the other and reinforces the asymmetry of power. Although efforts to approach the other have existed, they have been limited in that they have not been able to escape from binary thinking. Based on new materialism, this study expands the concept of the other from human-centered to a broader category that includes non-humans, and conceptualizes it as a being that constantly changes and is created through transversal connections between others. In addition, the concept of the other space is transformed from a fixed boundaries to open and dynamic space where others are intertwined to construct the world. This approach can provide implications for thinking about spatial life as an other that lives together with humans and non-humans, beyond human-centered thinking in geography education.

본 연구의 목적은 타자와 타자 공간의 의미를 전환하고 이에 대한 지리교육적 함의를 탐구하는 데 있다. 타자화는 근대적 사유에 기반한 이분법적 범주화를 통해 이루어지며, 이러한 구분은 타자를 소외시키고 권력의 비대칭성을 강화한다. 그동안 타자에 접근하려는 노력은 존재하였으나 이분법적 사유에서 벗어나지 못하였다는 한계를 지닌다. 본 연구에서는 신유물론에 기반하여 타자의 개념을 인간 중심에서 벗어나 비인간을 포함하는 더 넓은 범주로 확장하고, 타자들 간의 횡단적 연결을 통해 끊임없이 변이하고 창조되는 존재로 개념화한다. 또한 타자 공간의 개념을 고정된 경계에서 벗어나 타자들이 얽혀 세계를 구성하는 개방적이고 역동적인 공간으로 전환한다. 이러한 접근은 지리교육에서 인간 중심적 사유를 넘어 인간 및 비인간과 함께 거주하는 타자로서 공간적 삶을 사유하기 위한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
