Exploring Teaching Strategies for African Region Learning in Elementary Geography 초등 지리에서 아프리카 지역 학습을 위한 수업 전략의 모색: 이호욱¹ · 양서연²

Abstract

In this study, we explore teaching strategies that aim to enhance awareness of the African region in elementary geography. To effectively challenge the prevailing stereotype of Africa in society, it is necessary to guide elementary school students towards developing an accurate understanding of the continent. For this, we conducted a survey on the awareness of Africa among preservice teachers and reviewed previous studies that discussed the problems and alternatives of regional learning about Africa. In addition, after discussing lesson ideas with preservice teachers, we identified specific teaching strategies for learning the African region and proposed as follows. First, it is a teaching strategy to investigate examples of African people who excel in diverse fields. Second, it is a teaching strategy to compare cases that cause misunderstandings and prejudices of Africa with cases that refute them. Third, it is a teaching strategy to explore cases in which African residents attempt to solve local issues by themselves.

본 연구에서는 초등 지리에서 아프리카 지역의 인식 개선을 도모하는 수업 전략을 모색한다. 사회에 널리 퍼져있는 아프리카에 대한 고정 관념을 극복하려면, 초등학생부터 아프리카 지역을 바르게 이해할 수 있도록 효과적으로 지도할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 예비교사들을 대상으로 아프리카 지역에 대한 인식 조사를 실시하였고, 아프리카 지역 학습의 문제점과 대안을 논의한 선행연구를 검토하였다. 그리고 예비교사들과 함께 수업 아이디어를 논의한 결과를 바탕으로 아프리카 지역 학습을 위한 수업 전략을 구체화하여 다음과 같이 제안하였다. 첫째, 다양한 분야에서 두각을 드러내는 인물의 사례를 조사하는 수업 전략이다. 둘째, 오해와 편견을 유발하는 사례와 이를 반박하는 사례를 비교하는 수업 전략이다. 셋째, 주민들이 지역 현안들을 해결하기 위해 스스로 노력하는 사례를 탐구하는 수업 전략이다.
