The Conceptualization of Place as Assemblage and the Transformation of the Meaning of Sense of Place

Abstract
In this study, the limitations of the existing concept of place were pointed out, and place as assemblage was conceptualized. Place as assemblage is a temporal stability in which heterogeneous entities are connected to create meaning and are open to variation. This goes beyond static essentialist conceptions of place and opens up place to dynamism and complexity. This perspective deconstructs the binary relationship between place and space, which is transformed into a dynamic relationship of territorialization and deterritorialization. In addition, in order to change the meaning of sense of place, a new discussion was conducted based on the concept of becoming-place. A sense of place can be seen as a way of understanding a place based on the affects that are formed during the process of becoming-place. Unlike the directionality of rootedness, it implies variation while having a consistent meaning and sense of place. This shift in the conceptualization of place and sense of place can provide meaningful implications for geography education, and implications for geography education were derived.

본 연구에서는 기존의 장소 개념이 지닌 한계를 지적하고, 이를 보완하기 위해 배치로서의 장소를 개념화하여 논의하였다. 배치로서의 장소는 이질적 개체들이 연결되어 모종의 의미가 생성되며, 변이에 열려있는 일시적 안정성을 지닌다. 이는 정적인 본질주의적 장소 개념을 넘어서, 장소를 역동성과 복잡성으로 개방한다. 이와 같은 관점은 장소와 공간 간의 이분법적 관계를 해체하며, 장소와 공간은 영토화와 탈영토화의 역동적 관계로 전환된다. 또한 장소감의 의미를 전환하기 위하여 장소-되기 개념에 기반하여 새롭게 논의하였다. 장소감은 장소-되기의 과정에서 형성되는 감응에 기반하여 장소를 이해하는 방식으로 볼 수 있다. 이는 뿌리내림의 방향성과는 달리, 장소에 대해 일관성 있는 의미와 감각을 가지면서도 변이를 함축하고 있다. 이와 같은 장소와 장소감의 개념 전환은 지리교육에도 의미 있는 시사점을 제공해줄 수 있을 것으로 보고, 지리교육에의 함의를 도출하였다.
