Study on the Direction of More-than-human Geographical Education in Elementary Social Studies: Focusing on Issues of Animals

Abstract
This study aims to explore the possibilities of more-than-human geographical education in elementary social studies based on the relationship between animals and children. This study analyzed the perspective of animals in more-than-human geographies, the value of more-than-human geographic education using animals and children’s perception of animals. As a result, the basic direction of more-than-human geographic education in elementary social studies was as follows. First, in terms of cognition, elementary social studies should strengthen the perspective of ecological networks on the relationship between humans, non-humans, and the environment in various subject areas. Second, in terms of content, it will be effective when organizing animal issues as the main content of sustainability education. Third, in practical terms, it needs to help learners redefine the place as a hybrid place of life for humans and animals and find ways to live with animals through place exploration. This study is meaningful in that it looked at children’s characteristics with a new perspective and suggested the direction of geographic education for children.

본 연구는 동물과 어린이의 관련성을 토대로 하여 초등 사회과에서 인간 너머 지리교육의 방향을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 인간 너머의 지리학의 출현과 그 의미를 확인하고 인간-비인간 동물의 관계에 대해 고찰하였다. 그리고 동물에 대한 어린이의 인식을 탐색하여 동물을 주제로 한 인간 너머 지리교육의 가능성을 확인하였다. 이를 토대로 초등 사회과에서 인간 너머 지리교육의 방향을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인식적 측면에서 초등 사회과는 다양한 주제 영역에서 인간과 비인간, 환경의 관계에 대한 생태적 네트워크의 관점을 반영해야 한다. 둘째, 내용적 측면에서 어린이에게 친숙한 동물이나 동물 문제를 주제로 구성하므로 공존의 가치와 지속가능한 삶터를 지향하도록 해야 한다. 셋째, 실천적 측면에서 학습자가 장소를 인간과 동물의 혼성적 삶터로 재정의하고 장소 탐색을 통해 동물과 함께 사는 방법을 모색하게 해야 한다. 본 연구는 지속가능성을 추구하는 초등 지리교육으로서 어린이의 인식적 특성을 기반으로 실현 가능한 인간 너머 지리교육의 방향을 제안하였다는 의의를 지닌다.
