Development of a Teaching and Learning Model for Critical Global Citizenship Education Using Photovoice

Abstract
Globalization and capitalism exacerbate spatial inequalities and contribute to socio-economic polarization. In particular, the process of global economic restructuring has widened regional development gaps, underscoring the need for critical inquiry into spatial inequalities and social justice in geography education. Against this backdrop, this study aligns with the direction of the 2022 revised curriculum to analyze issues of spatial inequality within the subject Global Citizenship and Geography. Drawing on Paulo Freire’s concept of critical literacy, this research proposes a teaching and learning model for fostering critical global citizenship education. Specifically, the model presented in this study incorporates the photovoice method, enabling students to critically explore the structural issues of the global economy and seek potential solutions. Through this approach, students develop critical thinking skills, strengthen their global interconnectedness, and grow as active global citizens. By offering pedagogical strategies to realize these educational transformations, this study contributes to the cultivation of critical global citizenship in geography education.

세계화와 자본주의는 공간적 불균등을 심화시키며, 사회·경제적 양극화를 초래하고 있다. 특히, 글로벌 경제의 구조조정 과정에서 지역 간 발전의 격차가 확대되고 있으며, 이는 지리교육에서 공간적 불균등과 사회 정의 문제를 비판적으로 탐구할 필요성을 강조하는 배경이 된다. 이에 본 연구는 2022 개정 교육과정의 방향에 맞춰 ‘세계시민과 지리’ 과목에서 공간적 불균등 문제를 분석하고, 파울로 프레이리의 비판적 문해교육 개념을 바탕으로 비판적 세계시민성 교육을 위한 교수·학습 모델을 제안한다. 특히, 본 연구에서 제시하는 교수·학습 모델은 포토보이스 기법을 활용하여 학생들이 글로벌 경제의 구조적 문제를 비판적으로 탐구하고 해결 방안을 모색할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 이를 통해 학생들은 비판적 사고 역량을 기르고, 세계와의 연결성을 강화하며, 실천적 세계시민으로 성장할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 변화를 실현하기 위한 교육적 실천 방안을 제안함으로써, 지리교육에서의 비판적 세계시민성 함양에 기여하고자 한다.
