Abstract
지금까지 중·고등학교 교과서에 기술되어 있는 리아 해안에 대한 표현은 ‘리아스 해안’, ‘리아스식 해안’ 등 두 가지 용어가 혼용되어 왔다. 개념도 학자들에 의해 학문적으로 논의된 정의보다는 포괄적으로 정의되어 있어서 교과서마다 각기 다르게 기술되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 리아 해안에 대해 최초로 언급한 리히트호펜과 20세기 초반 학자들의 학문적 논의를 살펴봄으로써, ‘rias’, ‘rias coasts’의 우리말 표현과 리아 해안에 대한 지형학적 특색이 무엇인지 살펴보고자 한다. 용어의 경우 리아스 해안, 리아스식 해안은 잘못된 표현이며, 리아 해안이 올바른 표현이다. 지형학적 특색으로 리아 해안은 산지로 이루어진 해안지역에서 산지 사이에 형성되어 있는 과거의 하곡에 후빙기 해수면 상승으로 바닷물이 들어차서 현재도 수심이 깊고 가파른 곡벽의 좁고 긴 곡지들이 발달해 있는 만입 하구이다.
Until now, the expression of ‘rias’ or ‘rias coasts’, which is described in middle and high school textbooks, has been mixed with two terms: 리아스 해안 (in Korean) and 리아스식 해안 (in Korean). Concepts are also defined comprehensively rather than academically discussed definitions by scholars, so they are described differently in each textbook. In this study, by examining the academic discussions of Lichthofen who first mentioned the ‘rias coasts’ and other scholars in the early 20th century, we looked at the Korean expressions of ‘rias’ and ‘rias coasts’ and the topographical characteristics of the rias coasts. The correct Korean expression of rias or rias coasts is not ‘리아스 해안 (in Korean)’ or ‘리아스식 해안 (in Korean)’ but to write ‘리아 해안 (in Korean)’. Rias or rias coasts are an mountainous-sided indented estuaries (embayment) that the former river valleys, drowned by Holocene rise of sea level, are deep, narrow and long funnel-shaped and have steep rock-bound cliffs.
