Exploring Place-Based Environmental Education for Participatory Citizens

Abstract
The climate crisis and environmental problems have already emerged as major issues around the world, and the importance of environmental education to transform people’s perceptions and lives and to make participatory citizens is growing. In this context, this study explored the meaning, characteristics, and practice cases of place-based environmental education for participatory citizens through place-based education (PBE), and derived the significance of place-based environmental education based on this. Place-based environmental education can find its value in terms of changing environmental awareness and sensitivity, cultivating empowerment through environmental practice, and fostering participatory citizens acting from the region. This study is meaningful in that it explored the discussion of place-based environmental education from various angles through literature research, and expanded the perspective of place-based education in environmental education.

기후위기와 환경문제는 이미 전 세계적인 주요 현안으로 등장하였으며, 생태환경보호 차원을 넘어 전 지구인의 인식 및 삶의 전환을 이루어 낼 수 있는 환경교육과 이를 통한 참여적 시민의 중요성이 커지고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 장소기반교육의 접근을 통해 참여적 시민을 위한 장소기반 환경교육의 의미와 특성, 실천사례를 탐색하였으며, 이를 토대로 장소기반 환경교육의 의의를 도출하였다. 장소기반 환경교육은 환경의식 및 환경감수성의 변화, 환경 실천을 통한 역량 함양, 지역에서부터 행동하는 참여적 시민의 양성 측면에서 그 가치를 찾을 수 있다. 본 연구는 장소기반 환경교육에 대한 기존 논의를 문헌연구를 통해 다각도로 탐색하고, 기존의 환경교육에서 장소기반교육을 바라보던 시각을 확장하였다는 데 연구의 의의가 있다.
