This study aims to identify the significance of ESD as practised in school geography according to the interpretations and definitions of each region and country by analysing the teaching practices of ESD in the Japanese upper secondary school compulsory subject “Geography”. To achieve this purpose, first, the definition of ESD and its relationship to school geography, which are interpreted differently in each region and country’s studies were reviewed through literature research. Second, the participant observation of a “geography” that conducted ESD was analysed. Third, learners’ responses to the lessons under observation and teachers who practised the participant observation lessons conducted semi-structured interviews and examined them. Fourth, the “Geography” practice that performed the ESD was identified based on the analyses. As a result, ESD in the new compulsory subject “Geography” practised in Japan, which was the subject of this study, had the following results: first, ESD in “Geography” is considered as the whole subject contents, not the specific units; second, ESD in “Geography” enables students to investigate and think about global issues based on proper data; and Finally, ESD in “Geography” that makes students think about global issues more locally and as their own.
본 연구는 일본의 고교 필수과목 “지리종합”에서 ESD의 수업실천 사례를 통해, 각 지역 및 국가의 해석 및 정의에 따라 학교지리 속에서 실천되고 있는 ESD의 특징을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 첫째, 일본을 포함한 각 지역 및 국가에 따라 다르게 해석되고 있는 ESD의 정의 및 학교지리와의 관계성에 대해서 문헌연구법을 통해 검토하였다. 둘째, ESD가 반영된 “지리종합” 수업을 참여 관찰법을 통해 조사를 진행, 그 특징을 분석한다. 셋째, 조사 대상이 된 수업을 받은 학습자의 반응과 참여관찰 수업을 실천한 수업자에 대해 반구조화 인터뷰 방법을 통해 조사를 진행하여, 학습자에게 ESD가 미친 영향과 수업자의 의도를 분석하였다. 넷째, 조사 및 분석한 내용을 바탕으로 “지리종합” 수업 속에서 실천된 ESD의 특징을 밝혔다. 그 결과 본 연구의 조사 대상이 된 일본의 새로운 필수 이수과목 “지리종합”에서는 첫째, 과목 전체적인 측면에서 고려되고 있는 ESD, 둘째, 지구적 과제에 대하여 타당한 자료를 조사하고 이에 근거하여 생각할 수 있는 ESD, 셋째, 지구적 과제를 지역적으로 보다 가깝게 자신의 것으로 생각해 볼 수 있는 ESD가 실천되고 있었다.
