Abstract
For the last two decades, due to the unprecedented social and environmental changes, there have been growing concerns about human unsustainability of the future in the world. While emphasizing school education as an efficient means to the challenges which human beings encounter nowadays, educational authorities worldwide have started to consider the notion of social and environmental sustainability as a main agenda for their national curriculum reform policies. This study aims to explore the meaning and the orientation of school geography for an era of human existential crisis, presupposing human existential concerns as a nature of education by referring to Gert Biesta’s World-centred Education (WCE) theory. Particularly, by focusing on the ideas of subjectification and its quality in the WCE, this paper argues the need to reconceptualize school geography in a new three dimensions: geographical subjectification, rich knowledge, and the pedagogy of interruption. This study suggests a reified world-centered school geography beyond the theoretical conceptualization by providing a concrete example of urban geography curriculum in school.
