Introducing the 2022 Revised Global Citizen and Geography Curriculum

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to introduce the basic direction and focus, content structure, and standards of the revised 2022 Global Citizen and Geography curriculum. In addition, the article discusses concerns in the curriculum development process and future tasks. The basic direction of the Global Citizen and Geography curriculum was considering the logical connections of the entire unit, adopting a multi-scalar approach and fostering relational thinking, and cultivating global citizens who empathize with others and behave for a better world. The main focus of the development was establishing sequence among elementary, middle, and high school curricula, organizing content in accordance with the direction the county and society aim for, and reducing the amount of learning. Unit 1 examines the meaning of globalization and the dynamics of region, unit 2 explores the diversity of the world, focusing on physical geography and culture, unit 3 deals with the characteristics of the world as a network, focusing on population and economy, and unit 4 aims for a sustainable world through eco-friendly life and peace. Global Citizen and Geography explicitly seeks to cultivate citizenship through geography education. However, it was necessary to consider the balance between innovation and stability in that the subject was a general elective course with a high possibility of becoming a Korean SAT subject. Therefore, the process of selecting specific content required much consideration, while reducing the amount of learning. For the successful settlement of Global Citizenship and Geography subject, meaningful materialization of the curriculum through textbooks and classroom activities is critical.

이 연구의 목적은 2022 개정 세계시민과 지리 교육과정의 기본방향과 주안점, 내용 체계 및 성취기준을 소개하는 것이다. 나아가 교육과정 개발 과정에서의 고민과 앞으로의 과제에 대해 논의하는 것이다. 세계시민과 지리 교육과정의 기본방향은 전체 단원 구성의 논리적 연계성 고려, 다중 스케일 관점 접근과 관계적 사고 함양, 타인에 공감하고 더 나은 세계를 위해 실천하는 세계시민 양성이다. 교육과정 개발의 주안점은 초중고 교육과정 간의 계열성 확보, 국가 및 사회가 지향하는 방향성에 부합하는 내용 구성, 학습량 축소이다. 전체 단원은 세계화의 의미와 지역의 역동성을 탐색하는 1단원, 자연환경과 문화를 중심으로 세계의 다양성을 다루는 2단원, 인구와 경제를 중심으로 네트워크로서의 세계 특성을 다루는 3단원, 친환경적 삶과 평화 등을 통해 지속가능한 세계를 지향하는 4단원으로 구성되었다. 세계시민과 지리 과목은 지리교육을 통한 시민성 함양을 지향하면서 새로운 정체성을 확립하고자 노력하였다. 그러나 수능 과목이 될 가능성이 높은 일반 선택 과목이라는 점에서 혁신성과 안정성 사이의 균형을 고려할 필요가 있었다. 또한 전반적으로 학습량을 감축하면서 학습자에게 의미 있는 내용을 선정하는 데에는 숙고의 과정이 필요했다. 세계시민과 지리 과목의 성공적인 정착을 위해서는 교과서와 현장 수업을 통한 교육과정의 의미 있는 실체화가 이루어져야 할 것이다.
