The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility and significance of the Geography of Subjects (GoS). In this study, it was judged that GoS could be established, and this GoS could contribute to enhancing the role and significance of geography within the subject ecosystem. GoS is a tentative concept that combines the perspectives, concepts, and methods of geography subjects that other subjects adopt in the curriculum development and the planning of classes. The researchers proposed elements of GoS by comprehensively reviewing the results of a questionnaire survey targeting elementary and secondary teachers and educational university professors majored in geography education and experience learning as geography education researchers and educators. They are Relational Geography, Place-based Education (PBE), Spatial-Visual Communication (SVC), Regionalization, and Widening Horizon Model (WHM). Among them, PBE has the highest suitability as a GoS element. SVC is increasing in suitability with the recent demand of the times. In addition, WHM’s suitability is greatly increasing due to paradigmatic changes in the concept. Geography Subject is a combination of Geography Education and GoS. Ultimately, for the development of Geography Subjects, researchers and educators’ interest in, research, and development of GoS are required.
본 연구의 목적은 교과지리학의 성립 가능성과 그 의의를 탐색적으로 논의하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 교과지리학은 성립 가능하며, 교과생태계 내에서 지리교과의 역할과 의의를 제고하는 데 교과지리학이 기여할 수 있을 것으로 보았다. 교과지리학은 다른 교과들이 교육과정의 연구·개발과 수업의 계획·실천에서 채택하고 있는 지리교과의 관점, 개념, 방법을 묶어서 명명한 잠정적 개념이다. 연구진은 지리교육 연구자 및 교육자로서의 경험학습과 지리교육을 전공한 초중등 교사 및 교육대학교 교수들을 대상으로 한 질문지 조사결과를 종합적으로 검토하여 교과지리학의 요소들을 제안하였다. 관계적 인식, 장소기반교육, 공간적-시각적 소통, 지역화, 지평확대법 등 다섯가지가 그것이다. 이중에서 장소기반교육이 교과지리학 요소로서의 적합성이 가장 높다. 공간적-시각적 소통은 최근의 시대적 요구에 따라서, 지평확대법은 개념의 패러다임적 변화를 통하여 그 적합성이 크게 높아지고 있다. 지리교과학은 지리‘를’ 가르치는 것을 연구하는 지리교육학과 다른 교과들이 지리‘로’ 가르치는 점을 연구하는 교과지리학이 결합한 학문이다. 궁극적으로 지리교과학의 발전을 위하여 연구자, 교육자들의 교과지리학에 대한 관심과 연구, 개발을 위한 노력이 요청된다.
