Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning and potential of a geography-history integrated liberal education course entitled “Reading the History of World War II Through the Lens of Maps and Geography.” To this end, the author guided the participants, who were course students who volunteered to participate, through the completion of surveys and reflective journals, which were then analyzed using statistical methods and phenomenology, respectively. The findings revealed statistically significant correlations between the participants' improvements in geographical, historical, and integrated perspectives. Although these results were not significantly related to the participants’ majors and geography education backgrounds, male participants had significantly higher means than female participants. Additionally, most participants developed a refined, in-depth, and multifaceted understanding of World War II histories and interdisciplinary integration based on geography-history integrated perspectives, and many acquired their citizenships as a result of their improver integrated understanding of World War II histories. based on their improvements of their integrated understanding of World War II histories. Nevertheless, some participants showed little change or development despite taking the course. The results of this study facilitate meaningful discussions about the potential of geography-history integrated liberal education and the direction of future geography education.

본 연구는 제2차 세계대전사에 대한 지리적 접근을 주제로 하는 융합 교양 강좌인 ｢지도와 지리학으로 읽는 제2차 세계대전사｣를 사례로 지리 기반 융합형 교양교육 프로그램의 의의를 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 연구 진행을 위해 종강 직전에 연구 참여에 동의한 수강생 76명에게 ｢지도와 지리학으로 읽는 제2차 세계대전사｣ 강좌의 교육적 의의에 관한 설문지와 성찰일지를 작성하게 하였다. 설문지와 성찰일지는 각각 양적 분석 및 질적연구 방법론의 하나인 현상기술학을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 ｢지도와 지리학으로 읽는 제2차 세계대전사｣ 강좌 수강을 통한 연구참여자들의 지리적･역사적･통합적 안목의 발달 정도는 의미 있는 상관관계를 형성하였다. 이는 수강생의 전공이나 지리학 배경 지식과는 무관했지만, 남학생이 여학생보다 통계적으로 유의미하게 평균치가 높았다. 아울러 연구참여자 대부분은 지리-역사 통합적 관점을 바탕으로 제2차 세계대전사에 대한 심층적･다각적 이해를 제고하고 학제 간 통합의 의미를 분명하게 인식하였다. 그중 상당수는 제2차 세계대전사에 대한 지리-역사 통합적 이해를 시민성 제고로 발전시켰다. 하지만 소수의 연구참여자는 강좌 수강 후에도 별다른 변화나 발전이 없었다고 응답했다. 본 연구의 결과는 지리-역사 통합 교양교육의 가능성과 미래 지리교육의 방향에 대한 의미 있는 논의를 제시하리라고 기대된다.
