Abstract
This study tried to develop an education material for natural hazard so that a social studies teacher can apply in actual classes. In order to develop an effective natural hazard education material, this study derived basis knowledge through research on existing studies and analyzed the linkage between social studies and natural hazard education. And the study administered a requirement analysis out of 76 social studies teachers currently in teaching. Education materials were developed in an education module type composed of lesson plans, worksheets, and teacher assistance materials. This study developed a total of 10 learner-oriented educational modules. These modules are developed to help students to learn about regional characteristics, utilize actual data, as well as learn about all the phases of disaster management. The study developed an educational program for better understanding and efficient utilization of such developed educational material. 34 social studies teachers, currently in teaching, have participated in the program. Then, the study evaluated teaching efficacy, change of perception, and satisfaction on the program for the teachers who participated in the program. The result was that the teachers’ confidence on the composition and operation of natural hazard eduction was increased and the understanding on the knowledge and competency that students are to learn was also enhanced. Especially, the teachers showed a great satisfaction on the provision of an education module that includes detailed lesson plans and worksheets that can be used in actual classes.
