The Design and Application of Writing Class based on ‘Affect’ in School Geography

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning and experience of students being affected by geographical others through the design and application of affective writing classes in school geography. I paid attention to the difference between affect and emotion in order to apply affect to geography class. Affect showed a contrasting difference from emotion in terms of representaion, humanity, performativity, and relatedness, and affect was discussed as a possibility to supplement emotion in geography education. Unlike emotions in which individual subjective emotions are reproduced in the form of cognition, affect as a non-cognitive response flowing through the body is a concept used to reveal non-representation. This study focuses on the equal relationship between humans and non-humans and affect as a performance of the material body. Based on this, a class strategy for affective writing was developed and applied to a high school travel geography class. The students wrote as a way to relate their daily lives to the geographical other, and as a result of analyzing the performance, it was confirmed that the students were affected by the geographical other. Therefore, the affective writing class can be expected to authentic change the values and attitudes of students cultivated in the affective domain.

본 연구의 목적은 학교 지리에서 정동적 글쓰기 수업의 설계와 적용을 통해 학생들이 지리적 타자와 정동되는 경험을 하고 그 의미를 분석하는데 있다. 이를 위해 정동을 지리 수업에 적용하고자 정동과 감정의 차이점에 주목하였다. 정동은 재현성·인간성·수행성·관계성의 측면에서 기존 정의적 영역인 감정과는 대조적인 차이를 보였고, 지리교육에서 감정을 보완하는 가능성으로 정동을 논의했다. 개인의 주관적 정서가 범주화된 인식의 형태로 재현되는 감정과 달리, 신체에 흐르는 비인지적 반응으로서의 정동은 비재현성을 드러내기 위해 사용되는 개념이다. 본 연구는 인간과 비인간의 대등한 관계성과 물질적인 신체의 수행으로서의 정동에 주목한다. 이를 토대로 정동적 글쓰기를 위한 수업 전략을 개발하고 이를 고등학교 여행지리 수업에 적용하였다. 학생들은 자신의 일상적 삶과 지리적 타자를 관계 짓는 방안으로 정동적 글쓰기를 수행했고, 수행물을 분석한 결과 학생들이 지리적 타자와 정동됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 정동적 글쓰기 수업은 정의적 영역에서 함양되는 학생들의 가치·태도를 진정성 있게 변화시킬 것으로 기대할 수 있다.
