With the growing interest in geopolitics, it is not uncommon to hear the phrase “the return or resurgence of geopolitics”. However, the resurgence of geopolitics is complicated for geographers. The harm that geopolitics has done to human societies and the environmental deterministic simplifications that recent geopolitics has pursued are important reasons why geographers have distanced themselves from geopolitics. The attitude that geographical knowledge can be explained without acquiring specialized knowledge also contributes to geographers' distrust of geopolitics. Nevertheless, it cannot be ignored that geopolitics is generating interest in geography. This paper explores how geographers view and approach geopolitics in the midst of this celebration and rejection. To do so, the definition of geopolitics, the history of geopolitics in Korea will be briefly reviewed. Several implications will be drawn from the analysis of the development of geopolitics and the Korean geopolitical tradition. First, in order to establish and teach geopolitics, we need to actively embrace the orientation of critical geopolitics. Second, we need to actively expand the scale of geography, which has been reduced by a geopolitical imagination centered on the security of Korean Peninsula. Third, we should respond to the demand for geographical knowledge by actively utilizing geopolitics as a component of regional geography.
지정학에 대한 관심이 늘어나면서 지정학의 귀환이나 부활이라는 표현을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 지정학의 부활을 바라보는 지리학자의 마음은 복잡하다. 지정학이 인류사회에 끼친 해악과 최근의 지정학이 추구하는 환경결정론적 단순화는 지리학자들이 지정학과 거리를 두는 중요한 이유가 된다. 또한 지리적 지식이 전문적 지식을 습득하지 않고 설명될 수 있다는 태도 역시 지리학자들이 지정학을 불신하는 이유가 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지정학은 지리에 대한 대중의 관심을 불러일으키고 있다는 점을 무시할 수 없다. 본 논문은 이러한 환호와 배척 사이에서 지리학자들이 지정학을 어떻게 바라보고 접근할 것인지를 탐색한다. 이를 위해 지정학의 정의와 발달 과정과 함께 지정학적 전통을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 이를 통해 지정학을 지리교육에 적용하기 위한 몇 가지 함의가 도출된다. 첫째, 지리학적 지정학을 정립하고 교육하기 위해서는 비판지정학의 지향점을 적극적으로 포용해야 한다. 둘째, 한반도 안보 위주의 지정학적 상상력으로 인해 축소된 지리학의 스케일을 적극적으로 확대해야 한다. 셋째, 지정학을 지역지리를 구성하는 요소로 적극적으로 활용하여 지리지식의 수요에 대응해야 한다.
