Regional Characteristics of Banknote Iconographies of Africa andIts Implications for Geographical Education 아프리카 지폐 아이코노그래피의 지역적 특성과 그 지리교육적 함의: 이간용

Abstract

This aticle is to elucidate the regional characteristics of the African banknote iconographies in terms of subject matter and material, and its implications for geographical education. The research data included 259 current banknotes(2020) in 56 African countries. According to the analysis, African banknote iconographies showed a relatively distinct regional difference in terms of combination of subject and subtitle; religion and history in the north, figure and industry in the west, and figure and nature in the east and south, including the middle, and nature and nature in the islands. African banknote iconographies really featured a variety of materials. Among them, nature-related materials appeared frequently(75.3%) and animal materials appeared especially on more than half(51.4%) banknotes. However, there were relatively obvious differences among regions; mosques and relics in the north, and politicians and animals in the east and south, including the west, folk crafts and politicians in the central, and animals material, but there is a spatial pattern that shows a distinct trend of humanization in the northern region and naturalization in the southeastern region.

본 논문은 아프리카 지폐 아이코노그래피의 지역별 특성을 주제 및 소재 면에서 밝히고, 그 지리교육적 함의를 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 연구 자료는 아프리카 56개국의 현행권 최신 시리즈(2020년) 259종이었다. 분석 결과, 아프리카의 지폐 아이코노그래피는 주제와 부제의 조합 면에서 지역별로 비교적 뚜렷한 차이가 나타났다. 곧, 북부 지역에서는 종교와 역사, 서부 지역에서는 인물과 산업, 중부를 비롯한 동부 및 남부 지역에서는 인물과 자연, 그리고 도서 지역에서는 자연과 자연의 조합 비중이 높았다. 따라서 인물 주제를 제외한다면 북서(모로코)-남동(마다가스카르) 방향으로 전통-산업-자연 주제를 강조하는 공간적 변화 패턴을 보였다. 아프리카의 지폐 아이코노그래피에는 실로 다양한 소재가 등장하였는데, 전체 지폐 중 자연 관련 소재의 등장 빈도가 높았고(75.3%), 특히 절반 이상의(51.4%) 지폐에 동물 소재가 등장하는 공통점도 발견되었다. 그렇지만 지역별로도 비교적 분명한 차이가 있어, 북부 지역에서는 사원과 유물유적, 서부를 비롯한 동부 및 남부 지역에서는 정치인과 동물, 중부 지역에서는 민속공예와 정치인, 도서 지역에서는 동물과 지도를 소재로 활용하는 빈도가 높았다. 이처럼 아프리카의 지폐 아이코노그래피는 주제와 소재 면에서 지역별로 다채롭지만, 대략 북부 지역일수록 인문화, 동남부 지역일수록 자연화의 경향이 뚜렷한 공간적 패턴이 나타났다. 이는 각 지역의 역사와 문화, 정치와 경제 상황, 그리고 자연환경의 차이를 반영한 것으로 보인다. 이 연구는 세계의 다양성, 인간-자연 관계의 현대적 이해, 그리고 아프리카 지역에 대한 심층적 이해 등의 측면에서 가치 있는 지리교육적 함의를 지닐 것이다.
